Homestretch

8 months ago, while on vacation - a pipe burst ruined our home.
And tomorrow…we finally get to move back in!

Being displaced is a totally weird thing for a family to go through.
Stressful.  Emotional.
But then you kind of settle into your new temporary life.
For us, it has been in a high-rise just a few blocks from our “regular house.”  I’m immensely thankful for an insurance policy that covered alternate living for us.   That made all the difference.

The situation is far from ideal
but really, it hasn’t been all bad.  We made the best out of this adventure.

Our little pod of 4 stuck together.  Grew together.

Sunset swims all summer long
And regular walks around the neighborhood.   Notable landmarks:  The fiberglass cow climbing the brick facade above Little Market, the secret bookshop tucked inside Newberry Library & um, Walgreens .

Fee was forced into a big-girl bed
Hazel tap-danced on the bow of her boat-bed.

They pushed lots of elevator buttons.

I often wonder what memories from this experience the girls will carry into adulthood.  Happy ones, I bet.

During the time we have been out of our house, a lot of life happened.

Leo turned 1
Felix turned 2
Hazel turned 3
Felix started school.
Ellen graduated from Anesthesia School
A whole bunch of people we love got married.
And I took on a new role (same team) at work.

For the past 8 months we have been making the best of things….But god, we are so ready to get home.  Tomorrow!

#homewardbound

Weekend Getaway

My daughters and I spent the weekend in New York.
We did some shopping, toured ground zero, saw incredible theater and dined in some quaint little spots.  My daughters have grown up,  they have husbands, (children), homes and careers.  They work hard, they are kind and I am really proud of them.    I treasure every moment with them and especially enjoyed being roommates, it has many years since we’ve had sleepovers.  Last night as I was drifting off to sleep, I rolled over and saw my grown daughters as I remembered them as little girls.  They grew up sharing a bedroom and I often found them in the same bed cuddling….
a perfect weekend.

right now, i’m lost in a transition. the old is dead, and i don’t know what the new is. the only way to find the new is to start different things and see if there’s something that can come out of experimentation. it’s somewhat unsettling, but it’s a hopeful thing in a way. i’ve been here before, lots of times.

A GREAT day of Notre Dame Football with my husband and all 4 of our parents.

One game each season is reserved for our “Family Football Weekend.” - a tradition that began the fall Simon & I got engaged.  8 years ago.

It is a highlight of my year, every year.

Today
[while my girls were to auntie el’s for their first sleepover….!]
I got to spend an absolutely gorgeous day and night outside, right by Simon’s side, cheering on our favorite team and drinking bloody marys with our favorite parents.

Together we’ve seen more wins than losses
6-2
But today’s win was particularly sweet.

LOVE!  FAMILY!  FOOTBALL!

Working Mom Confession: I didn’t have time to bake a cake for Fee’s birthday, so I grabbed 4 mini-cupcakes from the office. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

pssst…Felix.
You turned 2 today.
And started school.
An incredibly big day in your rapidly expanding world.

We had pancakes for breakfast.  Dad ran to Walgreens last night at 11:45 to get candles so that he could poke them in your short stack.  I’m glad he did. You blew them out before the song was over.  Nailed it.

Your backpack was bigger than you, but that didn’t deter you from strapping it on and wobbling your way down the elevator,  through the parking garage…and right into school.  A little ball of sunshine.  You looked so sweet.

You were excited for school.  Ready.  Not a moment of hesitation (already familiar with whole program thanks to your older sis).  Hazel tried to give you an apple to give to your teacher, but you were too busy cuddling a baby doll.  Hazel handed it to Ms. Val on your behalf.  You said thank you.

You got a great report from the teachers.
And from Grandma A (who spent the remainder of the day with you)
And you were all smiles tonight - still radiating from the excitement of today.  You took the first step of this crazy life adventure with such joy, such delight.

Felix, I was so, so proud of you.
I love you from the bottom of my heart.

(on the big days like this.  and on the small days too)

Happy Birthday

Happy Labor Day!!!

2 years ago on Labor Day weekend we were on the deck at the lake house enjoying our morning coffee, donuts and each other on a beautiful Sunday morning.
In middle of her second donut, Emily said to Simon …..
“ I think we should head back to Chicago……”
Felix Belle was born on Labor Day 2012.

This weekend we celebrated our 2nd “Annual Fee’s Fest”!!!  We filled the coolers, set tables, and fired up the grills.  Family showed up and we celebrated this amazing little girl that God blessed us with.

Happy 2nd Birthday Felix.
We had a blast this weekend and wish you the best on your first day of school.
Looking forward to the 3rd A nnual Fee’s fest!
What a wonderful way to say goodbye to summer.
